Businesses band together to launch 'biggest ever' coffee cup recycling scheme

Costa and Starbucks are among the London firms collaborating to collect five million used coffee cups by end of 2017.

Businesses and high street retailers like Marks and Spencer all across the City of London rolled out the 'Square Mile Challenge', aiming to to collect five million disposable coffee cups for recycling before the end of 2017. The cups are to be collected via specially-designed recycling bins in shops, train stations, businesses, and on the streets across the capital's financial district.

The initiative was spearheaded by environmental charity Hubbub and backed by a host of companies from a range of sectors, and aims to tackle the estimated seven million coffee cups thrown away every day, of which less than one per cent are recycled.
