Bread Ahead sets sights beyond London with Harpenden launch
It will be the first site under the new owner-operator model.
Bread Ahead will open a 2,500 sq ft bakery and baking school in Harpenden on 12 October, marking the independent artisan bakery’s first site outside London.
The bakery, located on Harpenden High Street, will also be the first to open under Bread Ahead’s new owner-operator growth model, as the business looks to expand into regional and market towns across the UK.
The model will give Bread Ahead employees the opportunity to progress their careers, take on greater responsibility, and eventually run their own bakery with a share in its success.
The business said the approach is intended to invest in its existing people rather than relying solely on a conventional rollout of new sites.
Harpenden will be the first example of the model, with Bread Ahead considering further opportunities in UK regional and market towns based on the people, locations, and communities involved.
Bread Ahead Harpenden will offer sourdough and artisan breads, pastries, breakfast and brunch, alongside its range of doughnuts, including the Crème Brûlée Doughnut, seasonal specials and new creations.
Coffee and drinks will also be available throughout the day.
The site will include a children’s book corner, buggy space, Wi-Fi, and air conditioning.
It will also feature an upstairs baking classroom for Bread Ahead’s hands-on workshops and private hire.
Workshop bookings for January 2027 will open ahead of the new year.
The bakery is also planning community activities in Harpenden, including community mornings, family activities, and working with local charities, food banks, grassroots organisations, and local teams.
Children’s baking activities are being planned for the October half term, with further details to be announced.
