Hospitality insolvencies fall 24% in August
The figure was also 12% lower year-on-year.
Accommodation and food services insolvencies in the UK fell 24% month-on-month to 233 in August 2026, dropping from 306 in July.
The figure was also 12% lower than the 266 insolvencies recorded in August 2025.
“The summer heatwave and World Cup lifted consumers’ moods and boosted the hospitality industry, leading to a decline in insolvencies,” said Saxon Moseley, partner and head of leisure and hospitality at RSM UK.
However, Moseley said the sector’s recovery remains fragile, citing geopolitical uncertainty, the risk of interest rate rises, shifting government policy, and upcoming legislative changes as potential risks.
“Operators will be hoping next month’s budget provides clarity and support and doesn’t knock consumer confidence in the run-up to Christmas,” he said.
Gordon Thomson, restructuring partner at RSM UK, said the summer trading boost had helped keep businesses afloat but warned that weaker autumn trading could expose operators with historical debt.
“Restructuring assistance should be sought to help avoid the risk of future collapse if autumn trading disappoints,” Thomson said.
