Former Uber boss acquires UK ‘dark kitchens' business

The acquisition marks Travis Kalanick’s first expansion outside the US.

The food delivery company run by former Uber boss Travis Kalanick has acquired London ‘dark kitchens’ company Foodstars last year, Financial Times first reported.

City Storage Systems, trading as Cloud Kitchens in the US, bought the startup up last year, according to documents submitted to Companies House.

Founded in Bethnal Green in 2015, Foodstars now operates kitchen spaces across London, which it leases to restaurants focusing on selling food through third-party aggregators such as such as Deliveroo and Uber Eats.

The acquisition marks Kalanick’s first expansion outside of the United States, as he looks to capitalise on growing demand for food delivery.
