Caffè Nero denies allegations of extending food date labels

Caffè Nero has responded to an investigation from The Times, which claimed that staff have been changing the dates on muffins, cakes and scones to help sales and avoid excessive waste.
"We categorically deny any suggestion that extending the shelf life on food is practiced in our stores, and take any such allegation extremely seriously. We have a very strict policy on shelf life where no store is permitted to extend the product date unless instructed to do so by the supplier. Food safety and quality are paramount at Caffe Nero and we are investigating these allegations and will be taking action against any employee found contravening our policy," the chain said in a statement sent to QSR Media.
The Times reported that six former and present staff who have worked at Caffè Nero since 2016 confirmed that they had changed dates. Another 17 former workers, most of whom were with the coffee chain within the past five years, also claimed they “knew of the practice and one more had witnessed it.” However 23 people have never seen the practice and have no knowledge of it.
