McDonald's trials toy recycling scheme
The new usable items could be donated to communities across the UK and Ireland in 2020.
McDonald’s has launched its toy recycling trial to seven of its stores in part of the fast food giant’s commitment to innovative recycling solutions.
The “Big Toy Take Back” initiative will collect unwanted plastic toys up for recycling into new usable items.
Since summer, the chain has partnered with design firm ashortwalk and waste management company Terracycle in turning Happy Meal toys into reusable coffee cups, trays and toy concepts, which are examples of items that McDonald’s could donate to communities across the UK and Ireland in 2020.
“This test will enable us to work with our suppliers to create a range of new items, maximising the amount of plastic we can recycle and reducing the need for the creation of new virgin plastic,” McDonald’s UK and Ireland sustainability manager Helen McFarlane said.
The trial runs from 13 November to 11 December.
Earlier in September, McDonald’s has offered its customers an option to swap Happy Meal toys in exchange for a fruit bag.
