Why chicken is becoming the growth engine of UK fast-food

The UK has 2,100 chained chicken restaurants.

Chicken has become the standout growth story in the UK fast-food industry, accounting for 11% of total fast-food traffic, Meaningful Vision said.

In Q1 2026, UK chicken traffic grew by 6.2%, whilst 13 of the 17 tracked chicken chains recorded growth. Chicken also contributed half of the top ten fastest-growing brands, and five of the seven growing chains highlighted in the wider market analysis were chicken operators.

The shift is visible in headline footfall figures. Fast-food traffic was slightly positive in 2025 but fell by 1.2% in Q1 2026. February was particularly weak, with visits down 2.3% year on year. This points to a market where weaker like-for-like demand is now being compounded by slower expansion.

At the same time, fast-food chains in the UK are still adding sites. Amongst the top 130 chains, 71% were growing their estates, and 80% of those opened new stores early in the year. That creates a tougher competitive environment: more restaurants are fighting for customer visits at a time when overall traffic is under pressure.

According to Meaningful Vision, this points to a category-level shift rather than the success of one breakout brand. Growth is broad-based across established players, local operators, international chains and challengers.

Consumers are responding to a format that combines value, portability, flavour and customisation. Wings, tenders, wraps, burgers, boneless formats, dips and bold sauces all give chicken brands room to innovate while staying close to a familiar core product.

“Chicken is becoming one of the key growth engines of the fast-food market. What is important is not just the 6.2% traffic growth, but the breadth of that growth. When most of the market is under pressure and operators are still expanding, chicken brands stand out because they are creating demand across different formats, locations and consumer occasions,” Maria Vanifatova, CEO of Meaningful Vision Ltd, said.

Chicken is drawing consumer attention away from more mature fast-food formats, particularly burgers. Burgers remain one of the largest and most established parts of the market, but chicken is currently offering more of what consumers are looking for: flavour-led products, flexible formats, strong value cues and social-media-friendly menu innovation.

The next phase will be more competitive. As more chicken chains expand, the category itself will become more crowded. But for now, in a UK fast-food market where traffic is harder to win, chicken is setting the pace.
