Starbucks begins trialling new NextGen cup in London

The coffee giant invested US$10 million into the project.

Starbucks announced that it is now trialling its “NextGen” recyclable and compostable coffee cup in select stores in London, as well as Seattle, New York, San Francisco and Vancouver in the US.
The NextGen cups will look almost identical to the core cups, but feature a BioPBS-lining on the interior rather than polyethylene, a polymer generally harder to recycle.

The coffee giant invested US$10 million into the project, which was developed in partnership with Closed Loop Partners and the NextGen Consortium.

The trials are said to provide “key insights into the partner and customer experience, with the goal of no noticeable differences in performance” between the new cup and current cup.

The announcement comes days after Starbucks said that it is pausing the use of personal cups or tumblers in our stores across Europe, the Middle East and Africa due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
