Marugame Udon showcases Wabi Sabi Japanese art in stores
The chain has partnered with brand design Harrison to achieve this concept.
The art of Wabi Sabi is embracing imperfection including cracks, tears, distorted figures, and details which add character. This art is the concept of the Japanese restaurant chain Marugame Udon in its planned 150 stores across Europe.
In partnership with the full-service 360 brand design agency, Harrison, Marugame Udon showcases the authenticity and simplicity of its brand through the store design.
The Wabi Sabi principles incorporated by Harrison start with the high tables that were made using sustainable, local materials but using mortar joints that go back to Japanese joinery, and flooring with knots and kinks as opposed to uniform perfection.
Harrison’s inspiration was taken from end profiles of Japanese roof tiles to form textured clay wall features.
Customers will also see art commissioned from the Japanese diaspora that celebrates emerging creative talent and creates another connection to the restaurant’s Japanese roots.
For customers, an open kitchen concept allows them to be entertained by the goings-on in the kitchen as they order food whilst allowing the skills of the chefs to be on full display. Customers can also see that their food is made with fresh, healthy, quality ingredients.
“At Marugame Udon, we felt Harrison implemented a level of strategic depth which meant they not only understood what we wanted our brand to be but did so while staying true to our company’s foundations. We are incredibly proud of what we have created together so far – and look forward to many more restaurants in our future with Harrison, both on UK soil and further afield,” Keith Bird, CEO of Marugame Udon said.
