No more gig economy workers for Just Eat Takeaway, CEO says
The company also plans to add thousands of jobs in the UK.
The CEO of Just Eat Takeaway said he intends to end gig working at his company across Europe.
Jitse Groen told the BBC that he would rather run his company with staff who get benefits and more workplace protection, akin to the model he has used at the Takeaway.com part of the business he founded 20 years ago.
He added that he did not like the people his company relies on to deliver food from restaurants to have to endure tougher working conditions.
"We're a large multinational company with quite a lot of money and we want to insure our people," he said. "We want to be certain they do have benefits, that we do pay taxes on those workers."
In a separate interview with Sky News’ Ian King Live, Groen said the firm was going create jobs, with plans to invest "tens of millions of pounds" in Britain as the company reported a 44% surge in revenue to €1 billion in the first half of the year, driven by the coronavirus lockdown.
Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) were at €177 million (US$207 million), up from €76 million a year earlier, the company said.
