Delivery beefs up McDonald's sales

The fast food giant is poised to open a total of 40 outlets by end-2019.

McDonald’s reported a “further quarter of growth”, with one out of 10 orders originating from its delivery channel.

“Our restaurant estate has been complemented by the continued expansion of our home delivery service, McDelivery, which is now available in 950 restaurants, and accounts for just over 10% of our business,” McDonald’s UK & Ireland CEO Paul Pomroy said in a statement.

Pomroy also noted that on one day - 18th September - over 124,000 delivery orders were placed.

“Our My McDonald’s app is becoming even more popular with 3.6 million downloads since it launched a year ago,” he added.

Pomroy stressed convenience as a key driver for the fast food giant’s growth in the UK. The quarter also saw them investing in the ‘McDonald’s to Go’ takeaway only-format with a limited menu, resulting in “encouraging” results.

“We’ve continued to invest in the formats that our customers recognise and will have opened 40 new drive thru and high street restaurants this year by the end of 2019,” he said.
