McDonald's, Pret A Manger and KFC warn MPs that no-deal Brexit could bring supply pressures
The companies said that their customers will experience “the realities of a no deal Brexit”.
The chief executives of McDonald’s, Pret A Manger, KFC, along with supermarket businesses have sent a letter to members of parliament, stressing that a no-deal Brexit will disrupt their supplies.
“We are extremely concerned that our customers will be among the first to experience the realities of a no deal Brexit,” the letter stated.
The letter also says that product availability and best-before dates may decline, due to increased delays. They also mentioned that “there is very little general warehousing space available in the UK.”
“While we have been working closely with our suppliers on contingency plans it is not possible to mitigate all the risks to our supply chains and we fear significant disruption in the short term as a result if there is no Brexit deal,” they continued.
They are also anticipating risks with maintaining quality and durability of their food. The companies also fear that there will be pressures on food prices, driven by “higher transport costs, currency devaluation and tariffs.”
Other executives who signed the letter are from Sainsbury, Asda, Marks & Spencer, The Co-op, Waitrose, Costcutter, Lidl and the British Retail Consortium, where over 5,000 businesses are members.
