Almost half of meat eaters eyeing to cut meat consumption in 2020: survey
16% of non-vegans also said they would opt for a plant-based diet should more vegan options were introduced in restaurants.
Over 45% of meat eaters plans to reduce their meat intake by 2020, according to a recent survey by vegan cheese producer MozzaRisella.
49% of flexitarians also intend to reduce their meat consumption over the course of the upcoming year.
Based on 240 responses, the survey also noted that 16% of non-vegans said they would opt for a plant-based diet should more vegan options were introduced in restaurants.
Plant-based consumers also said they often struggled in looking for choice items in both shops and eat-out stores, with vegan cheese alternatives as the most difficult to find, followed by the lack of vegan bakery products, fish and dessert alternatives.
Contrary to the notion that veganism is a generational trend, MozzaRisella said, Generation X, or those born between 1965 to 1979, are leading the way in veganism, followed by Millennials and Baby Boomers.
The survey further highlighted that the key driver for diet choices are health and environment, followed by price and convenience. Almost four in ten are fully aware of where and how their food is being produced.
“More and more consumers are proactively avoiding certain ingredients, driven by medical reasons, healthier lifestyle choices, ethical or environmental concerns. Unfortunately, plant-based doesn’t always mean healthy, as some ingredients might be chemically extracted,” MozzaRisella co-founder Franco Vessio said in a statement.
