Curry is top comfort food for Brits during COVID-19 crisis: study

Takeaway curry orders increased by 107%.

Orders of Indian takeaways have more than doubled in the UK since the COVID-19 crisis, insights from online ordering solution provider Flipdish revealed.

Some restaurants, such as Tuk Tuk Indian Street Food in Edinburgh, reportedly experienced a boom in demand with online orders surging by 1,300%.

After an initial decline in sales last February, orders of Chinese and Thai started to bounce back, increasing 23% and 73%, respectively.

Fish and Chips shops saw sales rise by 74% whilst pizza demand grew 13% in one week.

The data was taken from a sample of 50 restaurants in the UK between 20 to 22 March compared to 6 to 8 March, just days before the government announced a lockdown.

The statistics are also released as Flipdish announces an increase of more than a third (35%) in new UK restaurant sign-ups in the last two weeks. In a year-on-year comparison, the number of UK restaurants transforming their business models to include takeaway services digitally has nearly tripled (270%).
