KFC becomes founding signatory of Courtauld Commitment 2025
The chicken chain became one of 100 founding signatories of the Courtauld Commitment 2025, a world-leading voluntary agreement led by resource efficiency charity WRAP on behalf of the UK Government, to reduce the environmental impact of food and drink.
The Courtauld Commitment has set the following three ambitious targets:
- A 20% reduction in food and drink waste arising in the UK
- A 20% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity of food and drink consumed in the UK
- A reduction in impact associated with water use in the supply chain
Janet Cox, Head of Health, Safety & Environment at KFC UKI, said: “We are proud to be a founding signatory of the Courtauld Commitment 2025 and welcome the ambition to cut the amount of resource used to produce our food and drink by a fifth over the next ten years. Our food donation scheme, which is now in 60 restaurants around the country, will help us make progress as we continue to roll it out into half of all of our 890 restaurants in the UK & Ireland by the end of 2016. In addition, 2015 saw us we reach our target of recycling 80% of back of house waste and we are pushing to go beyond this in 2016 and by April 2017, we aim to have zero waste to landfill.”
Richard Swannell, Director of Sustainable Food Systems, said: “Courtauld 2025 is our most ambitious agreement yet and we are delighted that KFC has pledged their support as a signatory. We are faced with some big challenges ahead with rising populations, climate change and dwindling resources. But tackling food waste offers a practical option to address these challenges and in doing so, will create new opportunities. Only by working together can we hope to realize the big changes that are essential to ensuring a more prosperous future for individuals, businesses and the planet.”
WRAP will report on progress to reflect the combined impact across the entire food system, and estimates that meeting the Commitment targets will deliver £20 billon worth of savings to the UK Economy and will help the UK deliver its part in the objectives of COP21 and put the UK on track to reduce food waste by half (home and retail), in accordance with the UK Sustainable Development Goal 12.3.
