Subway revamps sustainability agenda
The chain also has invested in creating new paper-based packaging.
Subway has refreshed its sustainability agenda, aiming to cut down on single-use plastic in all its restaurants and across company operations.
The chain’s “Fresh CSR Agenda” includes the placement of a ‘Choose to Refuse’ message by the drink dispensers, aiming to discourage guests from taking a straw and lid, continued staff training in offering baskets for dine-in orders and only placing bags on request, and providing napkins made from recycled material and salad bowls made from recycled plastic.
Subway says it is also seeking a source for paper-based salad and catering platters, and is looking for more sustainable cutlery and sauce pot options.
Subway has a franchised network of approximately 5,500 stores in 36 countries across Europe.
“We hope that our guests will join us by choosing to leave behind a lid and straw when purchasing a drink from our stores, whilst we search for more planet-friendly alternatives,” Subway UK and Ireland country director Colin Hughes said in a statement.
