Caffè Nero to roll out 3C Payment solution across all UK stores
3C Payment and Caffè Nero announced the deployment of 1,500 payment terminal devices across all 720 stores.
The new payment solution utilises 3C Payment’s “3C POS” P2PE (Point to Point Encrypted) terminal payment software which is specifically designed for the quick service hospitality industry. All transactions are then processed through the secure 3C Integra Payment Gateway ensuring speed, resilience, and security at all times.
Caffè Nero began the selection process for a new payment service provider back in January 2017. As the chosen provider, 3C Payment was successfully able to meet the requirements specified. These included integration into the Oracle Simphony point of sale system by means of the new Oracle Payment Interface (OPI), speed of transaction with a high focus on Contactless transactions and resilience with continued trading in the event of networks being unavailable.
In the space of 3 months, 3C Payment was able to build the required solution, achieve Oracle payment interface (OPI) validation and successfully pass Caffè Nero lab test and pilot credentials. The full rollout itself began in September 2017 and with adherence to a comprehensive project management plan, all 720 sites with 1,500 payment devices were completed within 11 weeks.
“We are absolutely delighted to have completed the Caffè Nero full UK rollout within such a short space of time," said Tim Goodwin, chief operating officer of 3C Payment. “Following our initial meetings with the Caffè Nero team our product team defined requirements, our development team built the solution, the 3C engineering team successfully validated it, tested it, piloted and deployed it and our project management team coordinated the whole piece.”
“This demonstrates the speed and agility of our operation along with our technical understanding of Oracle payment interfaces. All Caffè Nero sites will now benefit from the speed, security and resilience that our 3C POS solution brings to the Quick Service Hospitality industry.”
“Caffè Nero were very impressed with the professionalism of the 3C team, from scoping the proof of concept to the full roll-out. Finding and quickly deploying a reliable and fast solution was a top priority for us. 3C really understood this and working with a partner who are so passionate about delivering quality makes a real difference” said David Radburn, head of IT at Caffè Nero.
Another key requirement of Caffè Nero was the ability to keep their existing terminal hardware estate. 3C Payment in partnership with Secure Retail were able to design a process whereby all existing Verifone hardware would be wiped of the legacy software and “re-flashed” with the 3C Payment solution within a P2PE validated environment.
For the rollout itself, this meant that a detailed swap out process needed to be instigated whereby terminals with the legacy solution were swapped out for re-flashed 3C terminals whilst not interrupting trading. Caffè Nero themselves managed the swap out process with a dedicated mobile team tasked with completing all 720 stores within 11 weeks.
“We are very proud of our team of in-house engineers. At “top speed” we migrated over 80 stores per week; it was a remarkable achievement and a great team effort. The project was delivered on-time, within budget and critically, with minimum disruption to our store teams” said Mark Gurney of Caffè Nero, who led the project.
In addition to the full UK rollout, Caffè Nero has also begun deploying the 3C Payment solution across the USA and Poland.
