Pineapple replaces avocado as UK's fastest selling fruit: Prestige Purchasing
According to Tesco, pineapple sales surged 15% in 2017 whilst avocado sales increased by less than 10% last year.
It is not only the fruit itself that is popular but also pineapple-based product sales are going up as well. Tesco says that sales of pineapple juice increased by 20%, divisive Hawaiian pizzas by 15%, tinned pineapple chunks by 5% and a massive 30% sales increase on fresh-cut pineapple fingers.
In the last few years, there has been a demand hike as the fruit rises in popularity due to its health benefits and versatility. Demand for the tropical fruit has substantially increased as consumers increasingly view the fruit as an ingredient for mains, barbecues, fruit salads and as a healthy low-calorie snack.
According to the customs data, last year the UK imported 14% more pineapples than 2016. The vast majority came from Costa Rica. In the last 2 years, pineapple production in Costa Rica has increased by 10%.
Even though sales are going up very fast, there is still some way to go before pineapples overtake avocados, as Britons have consumed £175 million worth avocados in the last year, but only £44 million on pineapples.
