Wagamama swaps virgin plastic packaging for sustainable option
The new packaging will reduce the restaurant's carbon footprint by 62%.
Japanese-inspired British restaurant Wagamama is replacing the virgin plastic packaging it uses for takeouts with a sustainable option, reducing its carbon footprint by 62%.
Up to 330 tonnes of virgin plastics from Wagamama’s supply chain will be replaced by its new cPET packaging solution. The new sustainable packaging was rolled out in October, replacing eight million delivery packaging items in the process.
Wagamama claims that it is one of the first in the hospitality industry to use cPET for the bases of its bowl. cPET is a food-safe material made from 70 per cent recycled content and has excellent heat resistance.
The new packaging initiative contains recyclable material and has been developed over the past four years following collaboration between leading plastic experts, UK waste collectors, suppliers and forward-thinking product designers.
