McDonald's eyeing restart of walk-in takeaway by 22 February

New safety measures were introduced.

After voluntarily deciding to halt walk-in takeaways, McDonald’s said it is looking to reintroduce the option for its restaurants on 22 February.

The fast food giant said it worked with third party safety expert NSF International and identified a “small” number of changes to further enhance its procedures.

A number of our restaurants will trial reopening walk-in takeaway with these enhancements in place, McDonald’s said, before reopening it across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Due to government restrictions, we are unable to reopen takeaway in Scotland.

“A month ago we made the voluntary decision to temporarily close walk-in Takeaway while we reviewed our safety measures to ensure they reflect the evolving nature of the COVID-19 pandemic,” McDonald’s CEO for UK & Ireland Paul Pomroy said in a statement.

“New safety measures being introduced include visors as well as face coverings for customer facing employees, revised guidance and processes for our couriers to support their safe working and enhanced processes for managing customer and courier flow in restaurants.”

“The wellbeing of our people, as well as our suppliers, couriers and our customers remains our top priority, and we are confident the new processes in place will further enhance our already robust safety measures,” he added.

Grand Big Mac makes a return
In a separate announcement, McDonald’s is bringing back its limited edition Grand Big Mac.

Starting 10 February, the item will be sold until 23 March 23, priced at £4.39 for just the burger.

McDonald's is also adding other options to its menu, including the Homestyle Crispy Chicken and Mozzarella Dippers.

The Homestyle Crispy Chicken, which is the only new product, is made up of crispy chicken breast, hot and spicy mayo and caramelised onion compote, lettuce, bacon, red onions, and cheese.

Mozzarella Dippers, meanwhile, are cheese sticks coated in breadcrumbs, served with a salsa dip.

Making up the rest of the menu additions are McFlurry with Flake, and the McFlurry with Raspberry Flake.
