Greggs commits on its sustainability drive through its first eco-shop

They're keen on setting up 250 eco-shops by end-2022.

Greggs is opening its first eco-shop after the launching of the Greggs Pledge in 2021. The Greggs Pledge consists of 10 action points the company plans to make in making the world a better place by 2025 and beyond aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Last year, the eco-shop template was created to provide a testing ground for future environmentally friendly drives.

The British bakery chain seeks to set up 250 eco-shops by the end of 2022 and 25% of its branches should have implemented the scheme by 2025.

Beyond these goals are more targets that Greggs set for 2022: to have 760 breakfast clubs, reduce food waste created in manufacturing operations by an additional 10% and increasing food redistribution by a further 10%, open 30 Greggs Outlet shops to support local communities, 30% of all new products will be 'Healthier Choices', complete the Supplier Engagement Plan and publish Science-Based Targets, include an On-Pack Recycling Label on all own-brand packaging and build a road-map to move their all own-brand packaging into 'recyclable criteria', and achieve the National Equality Standard Assessment.

Greggs 2021 sustainability report states that 32% of their products are considered to be healthier options, 28% of all unsold food in shops was redistributed and 31% of manufacturing waste was reduced.

"As a business, we have a strong sense of responsibility to do the right thing for our people, customers, suppliers and communities and to lead positive change. The Greggs Pledge sets out our ambition to deliver this and our work towards achieving this commitment in the past year has helped us to grow into a stronger and better business,” said Roger Whiteside, Greggs Chief Executive Officer.

"Although there is still work to be done, with our clear plan for the next year I believe we are well-placed to meet our ambitious targets for 2025 and beyond, as our business continues to grow and evolve and we work together to make the world a better place" added Roger Whiteside.
