McDonald's says their new antibiotic policy on beef responds to “critical” public health issue

The fast food giant will report their progress on this on 2022.

McDonald’s has announced that they will be implementing a policy to reduce the use of antibiotics on beef to address the consequences of persons having greater resistance to its effects.

“McDonald’s believes antibiotic resistance is a critical public health issue and we take seriously our unique position to use our scale for good to continue to address this challenge,” a McDonald’s spokesperson told QSR Media. “That is why we are announcing an ambitious new policy to reduce the overall use of antibiotics important to human health, as defined by the World Health Organization.”

The fast food giant has partnered with beef producers to measure and understand the current usage of antibiotics. Then by 2020, they will be setting antibiotic reduction targets across their top ten beef sourcing markets and report their progress on 2022.

“As there is limited antibiotic usage data available across the global beef industry, McDonald’s is taking a strategic and phased approach to implementing our policy. This policy marks the latest step on our journey since we first developed a position on responsible antibiotics use in 2003 and follows our continued efforts to use our Scale for Good,” the spokesperson added.
