Starbucks Akasya assistant manager wins Barista Championships

Gürkan Kumak takes home the Starbucks 2015 EMEA Barista Championships.

“I want this championship to inspire partners in Turkey and encourage limitless coffee passion. Starbucks is my family. I entered this competition to inspire partners in Turkey and across the whole of EMEA,” Kumak said.

Kumak was one of 21 Starbucks baristas throughout the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region who took part in a two-day competition at the Old Truman Brewery in London. He is the assistant manager of Starbucks Akasya store in Istanbul, Turkey.

“The idea behind the championships is to celebrate what our baristas do every day,” Chad Moore, manager of Starbucks Global Coffee and Tea Education, said.

“They have a chance to demonstrate their passion and pride for coffee and showcase their skills.”

The baristas competed in three categories: Barista Craft, Signature Beverage and Personal Coffee Tastings.

“With the Barista Championships, we are elevating our partners and celebrating their craft,” Moore said.

“It’s so rewarding to see them recognized as true artists.”
