McDonald's loses ‘Big Mac' trademark dispute against Ireland-based fast food chain Supermac's
European regulators ruled that the fast food giant was not able to prove “genuine use” of the trademark.
Fast food giant McDonald’s has lost its “Big Mac” trademark to Ireland-based fast food chain Supermac’s.
As reported by Reuters, the ruling made by European regulators stated that McDonald’s was not able to prove “genuine use” of the trademark prior to the case being lodged in 2017.
The ruling will now allow other companies as well as McDonald’s to use the “Big Mac” name in the European Union.
Supermac’s, who provided the ruling to Reuters, said it can now expand in the United Kingdom and Europe. It claimed it had never had a product called “Big Mac” but that McDonald’s had supposedly blocked the Irish chain’s expansion due to the similarity of the two names.
