EXCLUSIVE: Costa Coffee to introduce further vegan items

Following the introduction of coconut milk to their menu earlier in the year, and the promise of further vegan offerings later in the year, it is clear that Costa are embracing changing consumer tastes.

As Costa’s Global Innovations Director Russell Braterman said at the time, “Opting for dairy-free alternatives and natural flavours are growing trends and coconut is becoming more and more popular. Coconut milk complements coffee perfectly and offers a fantastic alternative choice for our customers. We hope to not only encourage customers to try new and exciting ways to enjoy great coffee – but to escape the depths of UK winter with a deliciously smooth tasting coffee experience too.”

QSR Media went to find out more about Costa’s vegan friendly menu plans:

QSR Media: What is different about Costa’s coconut milk? Is it just the addition of soya or something else that went into its development?

Costa Coffee’s Coconut Drink (which contains soya) has been specifically developed for professional use in coffee. The addition of soya protein gives the product the stability it needs to create a rich, glossy microfoam - perfect for the creation of latte art, whilst still being a low-fat option for customers.

QSR Media: What’s behind Costa decision to start increasing their vegan range now?

At Costa Coffee, we want to be able to offer something for everyone. With the shift towards vegetarian and vegan diets in recent years, we recognise that we need to offer great products in food and coffee that align with all lifestyle choices.

QSR Media: How has customer take up of coconut milk been since you introduced it? How are the other vegan products performing?

We have been thrilled with the uptake of our vegan range, with both sales and customer feedback, making it clear that the demand for free-from dairy choices is high. The coconut drink coffees – such as the Coconut Flat White have been particularly strong sellers, as people customers look to try something new in 2018.

QSR Media: Will there be further vegan product lines introduced this year? If so can you give more details?

Costa Coffee will indeed be introducing further vegan items such as the Three Bean Spicy wrap launching in May as well as other savoury lunch options throughout the year. We will continue to add more cakes to the menu too like our popular Paradise Slice – watch this space!
