Greggs now offers Fairtrade bananas
The Fairtrade Foundation and Greggs announced that from Thursday 5th May, customers will be able to buy Fairtrade bananas in 350 of its shops as part of the chain's commitment to extending its healthy snacking options.
Health conscious customers can now enjoy Fairtrade bananas from Greggs as part of a trial over the forthcoming weeks.
Euan Venters, Commercial Director at the Fairtrade Foundation said: "We welcome Greggs’ commitment to extending the range of Fairtrade products on offer to their customers to bananas. This is sweet news indeed for banana producers. When you buy Fairtrade bananas, you’re supporting growers all around the world to get a fair price for their crop, in addition to a Fairtrade Premium to fund local community projects.”
Fairtrade works to support both banana farmers and workers employed on plantations, creating more value for producers. Fairtrade certified banana producers meet social, economic and environmental standards, including protection of workers’ rights and the environment and payment of the Fairtrade Minimum Price and an additional Fairtrade Premium to invest in business or community projects.
A spokesperson at Greggs said: "Greggs are proud to be able to make a positive difference through our commitment to purchasing Fairtrade bananas. We are committed to responsible sourcing and are active supporters of Fairtrade with all of our tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar sachets, orange juice and apple juice being certified Fairtrade."
