Costa Coffee joins the Chatty Café Scheme movement

The coffee chain found out that 6 out 10 adults in UK have less conversations compared to ten years ago.

Costa Coffee have become the first coffee chain the UK to join the Chatty Café Scheme, where ‘Chatter & Natter’ tables will be in over 300 of their branches.

The said table is a space provided for persons seeking human interaction. The movement’s goal is to combat loneliness by having people engage in short conversations.

A recent study conducted by Costa Coffee reveals that 49% admits that they engage in conversations in less than six times a day.

Around 42% chat online because of its convenience, attributing to the rise of digital communication.

75% say that they wish to have more social interactions but 63% of the respondents are hesitant to talk to a stranger.

“It is clear from our research that although we appear to be talking less as a nation, there’s a real desire for people to actually have more face-to-face conversations around the country,” Victoria Moorhouse, head of sustainability at Costa Coffee, said.

“Our coffee shops have always played an important role within communities; acting as a hub for people to meet, spend time together and most importantly, talk. With loneliness and social isolation on the rise, feeling part of a community is more important than ever,” she added.
