EXCLUSIVE: Meet the Latest Concept Looking to Hit the Grab and Go Market
We speak to Jeya Sivans, Founder of Hungry Dabba, a new concept in the Grab-and-Go space, producing Sri Lankan curries in recyclable tiffin carriers.
QSR: What is your background?
I come from a Sales and Consultancy background; I have worked for some major corporate institutions in London, mainly focusing on building multiple revenue streams with existing products and sustaining a feasible Sales strategy.
QSR: Why did you decide to start Hungry Dabba? What was the inspiration behind the concept?
After being made redundant job applications tired me, the thought of life within a circle scared me. My penny dropping moment came, like most, when I least expected it. Sitting at home eating my Amma's (mother's) cooking and I suddenly thought "wow, there is nothing in the world more comforting and tastier than Amma's food!" She is the single biggest inspiration and reason for Hungry Dabba; her cooking which raised 6 healthy children screamed authenticity and flavours and begged to be shared with the world! Well the UK for now!
QSR: What is the concept? What gap does it fill in the market?
Flavourful and healthy Sri Lankan food packed in a genuinely unique recyclable tiffin carrier.
Sri Lankan cuisine is very distinctive in southern Asia and naturally healthy; Hungry Dabba simply fills the gap by becoming a trend setter in the curry world without the cliches. There are no tikka masalas in the Hungry Dabba range!.
QSR: Where are you stocking / do you plan to stock your product?
We have had a lot of interest from various stores but we're holding out for the right stockist to take Hungry Dabba to the bellies of foodies the country over.
QSR: What is in the current product range?
We currently have 3 different types of curry; a Kozhli Dabba which is a chicken curry with rice and cabbage stir-fry, an Eeral Dabba which is a prawn curry with rice and cabbage stir-fry and a Green Dabba which is an aubergine curry with rice and Daal.
QSR: What prices to you expect the curries to sell at?
We plan to wholesale our Kozhli Dabba at £4, our Eeral Dabba at £4.50 and our Green Dabba at £3.50.
