Foodservice prices continue to fall amidst Brexit uncertainty: report

The fish segment alone maintained a year-on-year inflation of 13.3%.

Prices of eight of ten food and drink categories have dropped in September 2019, figures from the latest CGA Prestige Foodservice Price Index report has shown.

Amongst index categories, the fish segment alone maintained a year-on-year inflation of 13.3% due to quota changes made last year and increased import cost of the sterling.

Soft beverages category has seen a month-on-month drop by 10.6% for the first time since December 2016 whilst the fruit category is down by 2.7%

Despite continuous price drop since February, the latest index report noted a possibility of disruption amidst Brexit issues and challenges to some categories of food and drink.

“We are still seeing issues occurring across multiple categories as we head into the winter months. However, the continued drop in month-on-month inflation across the Index is a good sign for buyers. After a couple of tough inflationary years, the recent trend of negative month-on-month numbers across numerous categories will be helping to relieve pressure on operators,” Prestige Purchasing COO Phil McGuinness said.
