Over 8% UK Michelin-starred restaurants led by female chefs

The number of female chefs in the UK was up by a third since 2016.

The count of women chefs are on the rise globally, including in the UK, which reported 8% of Michelin-starred restaurants were led by female chefs, Chef’s Pencil May 2022 research showed.

Under the study, 25% of chefs in Michelin-starred restaurants are women in the UK.

“In the UK, the number of female chefs has increased by a third since 2016 and they now make up about a quarter of the workforce,” read the report.

“Until women are more equally represented in the hospitality sector or occupy higher positions within the industry on a more equal scale, we will continue to celebrate and elevate the achievements of women in this space,” said William Drew, Director of Content for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.

Chef’s Pencil analysed 2,286 Michelin-starred restaurants globally in 16 nations, and top 100 restaurants in the world ranked by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants association.
