Gov't post-Brexit immigration proposals ‘fail to deliver' on objectives, says hospitality union
It said businesses must be given time to adapt.
A hospitality union opined that the government’s “disastrous” post-Brexit immigration proposals “fail to deliver” on its objectives.
Recently, the UK government proposed a overhaul of its immigration policies, closing doors to cheap, low-skilled workers around the EU, to upskill its domestic labor force.
UK Hospitality said that businesses must be given time to adapt to such a measure, amidst labour shortage and “record low” levels of unemployment.
“These proposals will cut off future growth and expansion and deter investment in Britain’s high streets. It will lead to reduced levels of service for customers and business closures,” CEO Kate Nicholls said in a statement.
Staff hiring woes expected
Meanwhile, the hospitality industry is seen to struggle with hiring enough staff amidst the immigration policy changes, according to customer engagement solutions company Givex.
Citing data from KPMG, the technology firm noted that a quarter of employees or some three million workers in the UK restaurant and hospitality industries are from the EU.
Moreover, it said that nearly two-thirds (57%) of hospitality businesses are expected to increase staff hiring this year, based on its survey.
“Restaurant owners who need to hire new staff might also want to look at different talent pools,” EMEA managing director Jurgen Ketel suggested on this immigration overhaul situation.
