Chilango' new faux-chicken burrito enjoys ‘phenomenal' response as demand for plant-based food grows
The item delivered highest first week sales of any limited time offer in the company’s history.
Chilango’s plant-based faux-chicken burrito is now the chain’s second-best selling burrito, only beaten by chicken itself.
The Mexican restaurant company announced that its collaboration with plant-based vegan food company THIS on the “THIS Isn’t A Chicken” Burrito delivered the highest first week sales of any limited-time offer in their history.
Launched on 23 July, the faux-chicken burrito is made from soy and pea protein, with the THIS Isn’t Chicken pieces spiced with a blend of piquin, paprika and cumin, chargrilled and glazed with Chilango’s homemade BBQ Maple salsa and a squeeze of fresh lime.
Chilango says vegetarian and vegan choices now make up almost 20% of its main meal sales, growing by over 5% since 2018, with THIS Isn’t Chicken contributing to that by doubling its sales target since launch.
“It is a phenomenal launch for Chilango, and we have been blown away by the response and feedback so far. We are so excited to be working with the team at THIS, who have been great partners to collaborate with on launching this amazing product,” Chilango marketing director Katie Lister said.
Chilango currently has 12 sites across London, Birmingham and Manchester.
