Greggs on a vegan roll
The bakery chain is cooking up vegan versions of its most popular products.
Speaking with LBC last week, CEO Roger Whiteside said that the chain is cooking up vegan versions of all their most popular products.
“We are plugging away at seeing if we can come up with a vegan version of all our top-selling lines. Obviously people want a vegan option,” Roger Whiteside said in the interview, which marked the launch of the bakery’s 2,000th store.
“If we can succeed in doing that and produce something that tastes just as good as the meat version, then that will sell very successfully. That’s what’s been shown with the vegan sausage roll.”
The chain earlier confirmed its plans to open 100 new locations this year alone.
The news comes as a luxury cruise ship decided to make a stop at Newcastle upon Tyne.
The plan: pick up signature items from Greggs - including its popular vegan Sausage rolls.
"Our UK crew told us that a visit to Newcastle wouldn’t be complete without a taste of Greggs as a culinary ‘must-try’, and that for European travellers it joins the echelons of British food icons alongside fish & chips, afternoon tea and the sunday roast,” Captain Johannes Tysee of the Azamara Journey cruise ship told The Sun.
Apart from the vegan rolls, Greggs’ sausage rolls and stottie cake were on the menu for the ship’s passengers. The cruise, a ten-day culinary tour of Northern Europe, made the special stop to pick up the items.
